I joined a guild that is anything but helpful and i would like to quit, but not sure how.

The guild you joined only does anything if you log into the server that guild is on. Rather than letting the possibility of such things turn you off guilds altogether, I suggest you look for a guild of people who play more like you do -- more casually, or more hardcore, or more RP-ish, or less RP-ish, or whatever it is that you want.
